Merewether Seals Fundraiser: Making Waves for Jenny’s Place

October 30, 2024

Domestic violence is a pressing issue that affects our entire community, and the Merewether Seals have taken a courageous stand. From September 7th to October 19th, this dedicated group of male swimmers committed to raising funds and awareness for Jenny’s Place, demonstrating how men can be powerful allies in the fight against domestic violence.

These local men are known for their commitment to braving the chilly waters year-round, and now they are setting a brave example of proactive engagement in domestic violence awareness. Recognising the alarming rates of domestic violence that devastate families across Australia, Merewether Seals Coordinator Mark Pepperall articulated their mission clearly: to lend their support to Jenny’s Place, who are on the front lines providing assistance to those in the community.

Dawn Walker, our CEO, praised the Merewether Seals for their impactful initiative, highlighting the importance of a male-only group engaging in conversations about domestic violence. She said:

“These guys have earned my respect because they have been so generous in their support of Jenny’s Place, and in championing the women and children of their community. Their dedication to speaking up and speaking out against violence is inspirational. This is a difficult subject and an even tougher conversation for men, but we know that when men start talking to one another about domestic and family violence, when men stand together to publicly prioritise the safety of women and children, and when men challenge each other to define what masculinity really means – this is when we’ll finally see a shift in attitudes and in the incidence of gendered violence in our community,”

Over their six-week campaign, the Merewether Seals raised an impressive $10,831.89 for Jenny’s Place. Their efforts created a buzz along the Merewether beachfront, featuring community events like a sausage sizzle, a toenail painting stall, a sip and support event, and lapathon, all aimed at fostering connection and raising awareness.

Be the Change

As the campaign concludes, the legacy of the Merewether Seals is clear – men can and must play a crucial role in combating domestic violence. Their actions are a powerful reminder that every individual can make a difference.

Now is the time for more men to join this movement. Together, we can amplify our voices, break the silence, and redefine masculinity in a way that prioritises respect and safety for all.

Let’s come together to support those affected by domestic violence, lend our voices to the cause, and create a community where everyone feels safe and valued. The Merewether Seals have shown us what’s possible when men unite for a common purpose.
